My newborn baby essentials: newborn baby must haves for baby and mum
There is so much on offer for expecting parents out there when it comes too newborn essentials. It’s been long 9 years since I last had a baby. I’ve found the products on the market have really changed.
The list of ‘newborn essentials’ presented to new parents is mind boggling. One could look at this list and feel pressured to buy every knick-knack on the market. There are so many products available and so many mixed reviews for everything that it can be hard to know what you genuinely need.
In my first month with my newborn baby, apart from the standard essentials; nappies, rompers, bottles, toys and story books, Below is a list of items I used religiously at home.
The most important thing you need to invest in. I spent hours researching safety and design. You cannot take your baby home from the hospital without a car seat. When looking for a car seat I went for a 3 in 1 travel system from cybex global.
The infant car seat is equipped with an optimised Linear Side-impact Protection (L.S.P.) System, which – in combination with the energy-absorbing car seat shell – significantly increases your child’s safety in a side-impact collision. To make it easier to get your child in and out of the car, the seat can be swiveled to the door side of the car, thanks to the innovative Base Z rotation mechanism.
Snuzpod bedside crib
I picked a dove grey snuzpod after loads of research. The biggest attraction was the ability to attach to our bed via Straps provided, The strap goes around the stand of the SnuzPod and through the frame or base of the bed, before clipping together and being pulled tight. Other features are
- NEW ComfortAir breathable system to help regulate temperature for a good night’s sleep
- NEW 3D breathable mattress included
- NEW machine washable mesh liner
- Meets new bedside crib safety standard BS EN 1130:2019
- Gentle reflux incline option
- Lightweight lift-off bassinet for use around the home
- Fits more beds than any other traditional bedside crib (new max. height 73cm)
The Sleepyhead of Sweden aka Dock-A-Tot or our baby nest as I refer to it, is a portable, light and functional sleeper. Newborns love the snug feel of the Sleepyhead as it mimics the tightness of the womb and my baby falls to sleep in it very easily. I use it during the day primarily and move it from room to room in order to keep her close to me. The cover is washable and it also comes in a range of colours and designs. However the only negative is that it is difficult to get the cover back on, once I have washed it. An added bonus is that it is great for taking with you when you are travelling and apparently baby’s are comforted by the familiar surroundings whilst sleeping away from home. There are two sizes, the Grand Deluxe from ages 0-8 months and the Grand Pod for ages 8-36 months. It also designed to be used it for play time, nappy changes and docking your tot anywhere really.

A stylish and portable baby sleep aid that helps comfort and settle your baby when you need it most. With super soft plush fabric and 4 soothing sounds including pink noise, the new deeper sounding alternative to white noise, and heartbeat, to mimic that of pregnant mum’s womb.
Bath support and changing Matt
After previously opting for a baby bath and mainly using the sink the first few months with my other two children. This time round I went for some different and practical I felt would suit my needs. This was a clevermama clever bath.
designed to fit over a standard sink, it makes bathtime so much easier. It cocoons your baby snugly in an uprgith position so they feel safe and relaxed during bathtime. Lightweight and collapsible makes it ideal for storage when not in use.
As for the changing Matt, I feel there are so many to choose from it’s down to personal preference. We chose a mamas & papas dream upon a cloud luxury changing Matt. A Soft padded changing mat with cloud shaped pillow, Includes a machine-washable towelling insert. This Coordinates with pieces from our Dream Upon a Cloud interiors collection and Suitable from birth.
Activity play Matt
Newborns need very few toys, they really just need lots of skin to skin and parental interaction and chatting. But we did find a Matt useful
Ensuring you engage in daily cognitive activities and tummy time with your baby is important from the newborn stage in order to help newborns stimulate brain activity and strengthen their neck muscles. Babies love stripes and these striped animals are great for engaging your baby.
breast pump or bottles
It’s totally your choice as a new mummy to choose breastfeeding or too bottle feed with formula. I was unsure with my 3 rd child as I had had a tough time with my previous baby. Therefore I have listed both products.

freerider baby sling
I was probably the most dubious about trying a sling this time round, I never used one with my 2 other children. I went for a freerider sling it was quick and simple to put on and I found a useful tutorial online with Newborn babies wanting to be held all the time – of course they do, they’ve just come out of the womb and they want to feel the warmth of your body and hear the beat of your heart. Don’t fight this instinct, just pop them in a sling!
